The Ultimate Hiring Question That Changes Everything

There’s a question I’ve started asking myself that completely changed how I hire.

It’s not “If I hire this person, will they be successful?”

It’s “If I don’t hire this person, will they be successful anyway?”

That question shifts everything.

When I meet someone who’s clearly going to be successful no matter where they land, that’s the person I want on my team. Because it means they’re self-driven, resourceful, and capable of thriving with or without me.

Those are the people who don’t drain your energy. They expand it.

Hiring those kinds of people frees you up as a leader to focus on staying a few steps ahead — to create new opportunities, new challenges, and new growth paths so they never feel capped.

That’s how you build retention. That’s how you build loyalty.

Because when great people see limitless opportunity in your organization, they stop looking anywhere else.
